Will my lid get hot when only hot coals remain?

Yes, your lid will get hot! Use a fire resistant glove to remove the lid, if needed. Do not touch with your bare hands.

Can I use my lid to snuff out the fire?

No, only use your lid if the flames are completely out and only hot coals remain. If you try and snuff out the flame with your lid you can create a chemical compound on the bottom called creosote.
